Abstract Flower Painting

Swoon-worthy Graphic Novels

| Burlington County Library

It’s springtime, and that means it’s time for flowers to bloom, and romance too!  (Though to be fair, it is never the wrong season for a well-written romance.) So here at BCLS, we want to offer you an array of graphic novels featuring lovely romances.

Book cover for Check Please

Even if you’re not a hockey fan, we think Check, Please! will delight you. This contemporary romance is about Eric “Bitty” Bittle and his time on the Samwell college hockey team. Bitty is a ray of sunshine who procrastinates by baking, or procrasti-bakes. Not only will you swoon over his romance with Jack, but you will fall head-over-heels for the entire Samwell hockey team and its camaraderie. An added bonus is all the hockey lingo you’ll pick up!

Bloom tells the delectable story of Ari, who is fresh out of high school and dreaming big of his band. He yearns to escape his seaside town and family-owned bakery, but then he meets Hector. The dreamy, serene blue palette of this book will enchant you and the softness of the art compliments the story perfectly. The only downside is that this book will leave you with a hankering for the perfect pastry!

The Girl from the Sea is a contemporary fantasy that features 15-year-old Morgan who wants to be free from her small town and life. But that desire to leave changes after being saved by mysterious Keltie, a selkie. This gently told coming-of-age tale will have you smiling sweetly.

Once you start the first volume of Heartstopper, you won’t be able to stop. This contemporary romance is set in a UK high school. We have anxious, openly gay Charlie who meets and befriends Nick, whose personality is warm and cozy like your favorite sweater (or jumper as they say over the pond). While there is pain in this story, there is also comfort. And for those who fall in love with Charlie and Nick, you can watch the TV adaptation of their story!
