As an illustrator, artist, designer, naturalist and writer, Allen Crawford has worked on a wide array of creative projects over the past thirty years with his wife, illustrator Susan Crawford. Their most notable joint project to date is a set of 400 species identification key illustrations for the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life in New York's American Museum of Natural History.

Allen’s latest illustrated book, A Wild Promise (Tin House 2023) commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the Endangered Species Act, and contains over 100 illustrations of endangered and threatened species.

His previous book, Whitman Illuminated: Song of Myself (Tin House 2014), is an illustrated edition of Walt Whitman's epic poem. The entire 256-page book was written by hand. It won numerous awards.

Allen has also been featured in David Scott Kessler’s documentary, The Pine Barrens. Much of Allen's spare time is spent volunteering for local conservation organizations like The Pinelands Preservation Alliance and the New Jersey Conservation Foundation.

He is currently serving as a seasonal trail steward for the NJ Park Service. He lives in Mount Holly, NJ.
