Magic, talking animals, giants, slumbering princesses and fairies! These are the hallmarks of fairy tales. If you love these types of stories, then February 26 is the day for you. It’s National Tell a Fairy Tale Day and there are so many ways to celebrate! Each member of your family could take turns reading their favorite fairy tales, or everyone could make up their own magical stories and either write them down or act them out in a family play or puppet show.

Some of the most popular fairy tales include Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel and Little Red Riding Hood. From the Grimm brothers to Hans Christian Anderson, there are many to choose. You’ll also find hundreds of fairy tales that have been retold with modern twists. These stories are called fractured fairy tales. Often, they’re told from a new perspective, such as when the Big Bad Wolf defends himself in The True Story of the Three Little Pigs or when the backstory of the Wicked Witch of the West comes to light in Gregory Maguire’s Wicked.

There are fairy tales for every age group and you can find plenty at BCLS. Scroll through the lists below or explore Novelist to find even more fantastic fairy tales.
