National Inventors’ Day is Feb. 11. President Ronald Regan recognized the day by proclamation in 1983 to celebrate Thomas Edison’s birthday.

Inventors create, shape and change the world we live in. A longtime New Jersey resident, Edison famously stated, “I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Along with Edison, there are other local inventors in our history. The Flexible Flyer, a great wintertime invention, was invented by Samuel Leeds Allen, a Cinnaminson native in 1889. Across the Delaware River, Benjamin Franklin was an inventor of many things, including the lightning rod and bifocals!

Our library collection features biographies and stories of these local inventors, along with stories about many other inventors! Have you used any of their inventions?
