Everyone knows a dog is human’s best friend and we’re celebrating National Dog Biscuit Day (yes, that’s a thing) on February 23 with some fun recipes from cookbooks tailor-made for our furry friends.

Just like with humans, it’s important to know where food comes from and what ingredients are in it. Making homemade dog biscuits is an easy and fun way to make sure your best friend is getting the best ingredients in their treats.

Let’s start with a simple recipe from Three Dog Bakery Cookbook that features only four ingredients.

Simple Simon’s Birthday Bones

makes 30 large bones

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

  • 2 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 cup natural peanut butter
  • 1 cup skim milk

In a bowl, combine flour and baking powder. In another bowl, mix peanut butter and milk.

Add wet mixture to dry and mix well.

Turn out dough on a lightly floured surface and knead.

Roll out to one-quarter inch thick.

Cut out shapes.

Place on greased baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until lightly brown.

Cool on a rack then store in an airtight container.
