Young Adult readers in search of a gorgeously rendered modern fairytale need look no further than Nagabe’s The Girl from the Other Side: Siuil, a Run. This 10-volume manga series is set to reach its conclusion this spring, so the time is right to begin your journey into a world where a mysterious curse transforms humans into animal skull-headed beasts.

A young girl, Shiva, has been cast out of her home village under suspicion of being a carrier of the curse. She is found, and tenderly cared for by one of the aforementioned beasts dubbed “Teacher.” The relationship between Shiva and Teacher is sweet, in contrast to the hard realities around them. The dreamlike quality of the story combined with Nagabe’s beautiful black-and-white artwork made The Girl from the Other Side: Siuil, A Run one of the very best things we discovered last year. (The BCLS currently has volumes one through six available in both physical and digital formats, with the rest to follow shortly.)
