We’re celebrating Autism Awareness Month with a spotlight on sensory programs and collections. There’s a saying, “If you know one person with autism, you know one person with autism.” Understanding that this is a spectrum disorder inspires us to offer a variety of programs to meet different needs. From using a visual schedule and activity stations for Sensory Story Times, to sequencing and science exploration in STEM programs, we hope to send a powerful message to families; children of all abilities are welcome to visit the library, enjoy, and explore. One of the best things about libraries is our inclusive nature and understanding that we are all connected.
Please take a look at the programs listed below. We have also recently added a search option to allow you to find sensory friendly programs more easily. Beginning at our Events Calendar, scroll down to the “sensory” option to select which programs may work best for your family. Please also consider using our Social Story – Going to the Library to prepare for a happy and successful library visit. In addition to our evolving sensory friendly programs, we have many adaptive toys and games that can be delivered to any of our locations. Our inventory includes musical instruments, tactile letters, sensory balls, PECS cards, and more. We have recently added VOX books to our catalog. These all-in-one books and audio invite families to share a story together or plug in earphones for individual listening.
Not having a good day or can’t get to the library? A couple of fun ways to experience the library from home are Tumblebooks, a collection of online animated talking books, and Beanstack, a new offering that is chock full of fun, seasonal activities that engage all of the senses. We would love to see you, so stop by soon!
