Senior entrepreneurs are a huge force in the economy according to Elizabeth Isele (Senior Innovation Fellow at Babson College and co-founder of Senior Entrepreneurship Works).  Recent research released by Civic Ventures and funded by MetLife Foundation shows that approximately 25 million people – one in four Americans ages 44 to 70 – are interested in starting businesses or nonprofit ventures in the next five to 10 years

I have started this new space on the BCLS Business Gateway for resources and links especially geared to seniors interested in “entrepreneuring” (a new term):.  Stop by regularly to see what I’ve added:

Quick Facts:

  • The Kauffman Foundation found the share of new entrepreneurs ages 55 to 64 grew from 14.3 percent in 1996 to 23.4 percent last year. Entrepreneurship among 45- to 54-year-olds saw a slight bump, while activity among younger age groups fell.  (The annual study does not look at the over-65 age group.)

  • Seniors have a higher survival rate than younger entrepreneurs:  Based on a Global Entrepreneur Monitor study, 48% of over 50s who have set up their business will survive over five years, compared to 29% of people who are 18-49,”

  • Senior Entrepreneurship Works: nonprofit organization designed to help Seniors Aged 50+ build sustainable businesses, create jobs, and stimulate economic self-reliance for themselves, their communities and the nation.  Offers education and training for senior entrepreneurs and intergenerational entrepreneur teams.  Goals include taking the intimidation out of entrepreneuring, but based in reality – no rose-colored glasses.
  • Created the Savvy Seniors Blog and Twitter @savvysrswork, which harvests and aggregates resources from global news publications, social media networks, and entrepreneurship experts on the web. 60% of boomers are creating green businesses
  • Created eProv Studio which uses the art of improvisation to help “Encore Entrepreneurs“ ignite and build ideas into opportunities.
