History of the newspaper:

The Central Record was founded in 1896 as a weekly community newspaper based in Medford, Burlington County, New Jersey, and focused on reporting the news of central Burlington County, an area eighteen miles east of Philadelphia. During its more than 120 years of publication, the newspaper chronicled the history and local news for Medford and the surrounding towns of Medford Lakes, Marlton, Shamong, Southampton, Tabernacle, Evesham, Marlton, and Mount Laurel.

Content and scope of index:

The Central Record Index currently contains 31,904 citations covering the years 1977 to 2008. Highlighted in this index are birth and marriage announcements, death notices and obituaries, legislative news, judicial and legal announcements, business and social concerns of the area. There is some indexing of local high school sport events and the Lenape Regional School District. The index also includes news of hometown soldiers during WWI, WWII, Korean, and Vietnam Wars, as well as more modern military actions.

The newspaper is available on microfilm from December 24, 1897 to October 1899, January to November 1916, and February 1927 to December 31, 2009. The microfilm is available at the Burlington County Library in Westampton. Paper issues from 2010-current are also available for research as well at the County Library. Research and photocopies will be done upon request for a fee. Please contact BCLS Reference staff for more information.

Indexing of The Central Record is on hiatus at this time. In the past, generous funding for the preservation microfilming of this newspaper was provided by the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the Department of State.
