Born on the Rancocas Creek: The Civil War's First Submarine

In 1857, an immigrant French engineer named Monsieur Brutus de Villeroi built a unique vessel along the Rancocas Creek. When civil war came to his adopted land, he donated it to the U.S. Navy, and proceeded to build a larger boat at their behest.
