In 1880, Dr. Francis Ashurst, pictured here, laid groundwork for Burlington County Memorial Hospital, first in the county, by establishing hospital service in a house at 130 Mount Holly Avenue. He was instrumental in building a larger 30-bed unit in 1883-84, on Madison Avenue, prior to his early death in the following year at age fourty-one.
The first "free school" in New Jersey, established by Clara barton at Bordentown in 1852 is pictured here. A state "Free School Law" followed in 1871, providing elementary education. Further legislation in 1894 brought the gradual development of high schools.
These students were transported to school in a day when horsepower came from horses.
