Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is the most recent entry in the long-running series of games from Ubisoft. The series' multi-part, semi-historical story follows the ancestors of a modern day individual who can access their memories via a machine called the Animus. Using the machine, the player travels back in time and is allowed to freely explore the open worlds of Medieval England, 15th Century Florence, the Thirteen American Colonies and the islands of the 18th Century Caribbean Sea!  As the games progress, the player takes control of different people from the past who are all part of a group of assassins tasked with disassembling another group known as the Templars. This new addition to the series allows you to fill the shoes of a pirate by the name of Edward Kenway and introduces a new game mechanic that blows other games out of the water!

The Burlington County Library System has nearly 500 video games in the collection
and the Assassin's Creed series is but one of many to choose from.
Currently, there are three versions available to borrow via your local library!

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

This follow-up to 2009's Assassins' Creed 2 has the player returning to the adventures of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a young nobleman from the late 15th Century in Florence. This release was the series' first inclusion of online multiplayer alongside the traditional single-player storyline.

Assassin's Creed III

This 2012 release continues the story of modern day protagonist, Desmond, while moving forward in time. AC3 introduces the Native American Ratonhnhaké:ton (later dubbed Connor) to the franchise. Players wander Colonial Era versions of Boston and New York while helping to ignite the American Revolution! This entry in the series does the best at inserting the player into living history and touches on almost every major incident leading up to and during the Revolution itself.

Exploration of the cities is similar to previous games but the activity of its inhabitants and the English troops occupying the streets is quite a sight. As you travel across the wilderness from colony to colony, the game allows you to hunt, explore and free-run through the scenery of America in the 18th Century!

Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag

The Caribbean, 1715. Legendary pirates rule the land and sea, plundering fortunes and bringing empires to their knees. Among these outlaws is Edward Kenway, a fearless young captain who earns the respect of the pirates, but whose thirst for gold and glory may destroy everything they have built.

This release introduces a new mechanic eluded to earlier in this blog entry...pirating. Sailing the open seas is something most never experience, but this game allows you to do just that (after a few introductory levels). Whether you choose to plunder or just explore, the ocean and the weather that comes along with it is the most impressive thing this series has ever offered. Hundreds of islands littered throughout the Caribbean are yours to sail to, jump out, and climb all over! The cities of Kingston, Havana, and Nassau are lively and filled with things to find and missions to accomplish.
