A fun way to promote early literacy and parent-child bonding through reading is the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. Any book your newborn, infant and/or toddler hears counts toward the 1,000 books goal. That means attending library story times and other reading programs, as well as being read to by family and friends, all count. You can even read the same books over and over again! The library’s online reading tracker, Beanstack, is a perfect way to keep track of the reading progress your little one makes. With each milestone, your child will earn online badges. In addition, stop by any of our BCLS locations for further recognition with a sticker reward and photo op! Beanstack also offers many useful features, such as booklists for all ages, recommendations based on a short interest survey and specific themed booklists.

To introduce 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, each library hosted a kick-off party with a special appearance by Elephant and Piggie, the beloved characters from the Mo Willems series. Young readers also participated in crafts and games. Stay tuned for more exciting 1KBBK celebrations. And be sure to check out our new 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten collection at each location for titles recommended by our librarians!
